CRIME REPORTS AND NEWS

NEW OPENING HOURS FOR POLICE STATION FRONT COUNTERS

The opening hours for the front counters at Saffron Walden and Dunmow police stations have changed. They are now open from 12midday to 6pm Monday to Saturday and are closed on Sundays.

Stansted village police station's front counter is now permanently closed.

Please note that these changes do not effect the actual duties of your Neighbourhood Policing Team who will continue to patrol their areas or the Response Team officers will continue to provide 24/7 cover.

URGENT WARNING: Aston Midshires Insurance: If you know anyone who has bought online car insurance from Aston Midshires Insurance, they are NOT insured! The company, which has been targeting mainly young drivers, is a complete scam. Across the UK young drivers are being stopped by the police and prosecuted for driving without insurance. In some cases, the cars are being impounded and risk being crushed. If you know someone who has taken out insurance with this firm, please tell them about this, and tell them not to drive again until fresh insurance has been arranged.

Theft of a motor vehicle, Peaslands Road, Saffron Walden: Between 11.00pm on 27/1/12 and 7.30am on 28/1/12 someone broke off and stole two wing mirrors from a red Audi RS 4 Quattro using an unknown implement.

Advertising scams: If you run a local business, be alert for cold-calls asking you to advertise in crime prevention, community safety or emergency services magazines. These calls generally pop-up towards the end of the financial year. The caller will claim to be from the police or "working with the police" to produce their magazine, which is untrue.

In some cases there will be an end product, but the circulation will be small and limited to the north of England, from where these firms usually originate. Under no circumstances should you agree to see a proof of your ad, because they will take that as a confirmation of order and chase you unmercifully for payment, even if you didn't actually agree to an order.

SHED SECURITY : Keep your property in your possession, not the burglar's:

  • Site your shed as close to the house as possible.

  • To prevent snooping, white-out the windows or fit net curtains

  • If you have opening windows in your shed, then screw them shut.

  • Fit a "close-shackled" padlock and a heavy-duty hasp and staple. Do not use screws, but bolt in place. If you can, fit a 5-lever mortise lock certified to  BS3621 instead.

  • Drill out the hinge screws so that they cannot be easily removed.

  • If the door is suitable, fit hinge-bolts. they are inexpensive and easy to fit.

  • Secure tools, mowers, cycles etc with a steel security cable.

  • Visibly mark all removable items with your house number or name, and postcode.

  • Fit a shed alarm, available for £14.99 from our security shop - see side panel -  can provide great peace of mind.

  • Further information about locks, padlocks and other security measures, can be obtained from your local Crime Reduction Tactical Advisor, Peter Caulfield, by contacting him via the new non-emergency number 101, and asking for extension 395387
